Neurointerventional Surgery (also called interventional neuroradiology or NIR), is practiced by subspecialty-trained neuroradiologists, specializing in minimally invasive techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the brain, head and neck, spine, and spinal cord. It involves catheters and radiology to diagnose and treat neurological conditions and diseases. These types of procedures are called “minimally invasive,” because they generally need only a tiny incision instead of a larger incision necessary for open surgery.

Doctors consult with neurointerventional surgeons for a wide variety of suspected and known diseases, disorders, and conditions. Your doctor may send you to a neurointerventional surgeon to have a diagnostic imaging test, such as an angiogram or CT scan. The neurointerventional surgeon will provide written test results and may consult with the referring doctor to make a diagnosis. Your doctor may also consult with a neurointerventional surgeon to determine the best treatment plan for you and to provide a minimally invasive treatment.
